NFL Predictions 2009: The Tennessee Titans unseated the Colts from their AFC South throne last season, taking the division and edging Indianapolis by one game with a 13-3 record. Despite the fantastic regular season finish, the Titans likely spent most of the off-season trying to get over a bitter 10-13 loss at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoff.
Sportsbook.com, however, is looking for a recovery from Jeff Fisher's squad this year as the Titans are favored to win over 9 games at -150 moneyline odds in the bookmaker's Tennessee Titans NFL Predictions 2009.
Tennessee did not rewrite the book last season in order to compile their impressive 13-3 mark. They did it the old fashioned way, by playing hard nosed defense, creating turnovers, and pounding the ball on the ground. The Titans ranked seventh in the league in yards per game allowed at 293.6 per game and they allowed the second fewest points per game in the NFL, holding opponents to an average of 14.6 points per outing.
Fisher will, without question, employ the same formula this year in hopes of guiding the Titans to a third straight post-season appearance.
The Titans did lose mammoth defensive tackle and team sack leader Albert Haynesworth to the Redskins via free agency, but they should still be one of the best defensive units in the AFC. Defensive ends Kyle Vanden Bosch and Jevon Kearse are still in place and Tennessee has good depth at the tackle positions with Jovan Haye (acquired in the off-season – TB), Jason Jones, Tony Brown, and rookie Sen'Derrick Marks.
The rest of the defensive unit shapes up nicely with the only other loss being reserve defensive back Chris Carr.
Offensively, the Titans were efficient, ranking 21st in yards per game at 313.6 but 14th in points per game at 23.4. They also limited turnovers enough to finish +14 in turnover margin, second only to the Dolphins +17.
Veteran quarterback Kerry Collins provided a steady hand under center as he threw for 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 15 starts (80.2 passer rating). All indications are that Collins will remain the starter this year, despite Vince Young's attempts to get his act together.
The bread and butter for Jeff Fisher's offense last year was the ground game, and it will be once again this season. Chris Johnson, who rushed for 1228 yards as a rookie, will be the feature back behind Tennessee's stout offensive line. LenDale White will also get plenty of carries, especially in short yardage situations, to spell the lightning quick Johnson.
The Titans receiving corps added a much needed threat by picking up former Steeler Nate Washington. The speedy Washington will join a group that features a solid Justin Gage and emerging tight end Bo Scaife.
Tennessee will get a tough test right out of the box this year, having to face the defending champion Steelers in Pittsburgh on September 10th.
