2010 NFL Odds: The AFC East could be one of the most competitive division in football this year, particularly if the Dolphins can return to the form that earned them an 11-5 record in 2008. Even if Miami falters, though, the Patriots and Jets figure to engage in a war for the division title. Conversely, the AFC West looks like it will belong to the Chargers once again as the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos all look to be at least a year or two away from challenging San Diego. 2010 NFL Odds at SPORTSBETTING.com have both New England and New York listed at +125 moneyline odds to win the AFC East, while the Chargers are pegged as a -350 moneyline favorite to repeat out West.
AFC East:
New England Patriots (+125): The Patriots will certainly have a difficult road to repeat their division winning feat from a year
ago; however, the pieces are in place for them to do it. Tom Brady is healthy and his numbers should only improve the further he gets away from knee surgery. New England only added to an offense that ranked third in yards per game and sixth in scoring by signing veterans David Patten and Torry Holt.
The Patriots defense looks much younger than it did two years ago, but what it lacks in age it makes up for in talent. A good core is in place with linebackers Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes as well as cornerbacks Darius Butler and Devin McCourty. It may not be the equal of the Jets, but New York's offense is even further away from the Pats offense.
AFC West:
San Diego Chargers (-350): The Chargers won their fourth straight AFC West title last season with a 13-3 overall record and 5-1 mark in division play. The team saw some big names depart in the offseason, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Jamal Williams, and Antonio Cromartie. Only three players were brought in, those being cornerbacks Nathan Vasher and Donald Strickland and kicker Nick Novak. San Diego also is dealing with contract issues with linebacker Shawne Merriman and wide receiver Vincent Jackson, who is also suspended for the first three games of the season.
The Bolts are definitely starting to show some chinks in the armor, but they should own the division for at least one more year.
