2010 NFL Lines: There is always debate as to which division is the toughest in football and, of course, the argument can change from season to season. The Super Bowl winner does not necessarily come from the league's roughest division, though, which this year looks to be the NFC East. The latest 2010 NFL Lines at BetUS.com have the AFC South and NFC East each listed at +450 moneyline odds as the two most likely divisions to produce the winner of Super Bowl XLV.
Since the NFL restructured to eight four team divisions in 2002, the division with the best overall record has gone on to win
the Super Bowl just two times. In 2003 the Buccaneers won the championship after the NFC south put together a 37-26-1 record in the regular season and in 2004 the Patriots won the Lombardi coming from an AFC East that went 36-28 during the regular season.
Since those two victories, the Super Bowl winning division has ranked near the top of the league in most cases, but not at the top. In 2005 the Pats repeated and the AFC East placed second to the AFC North's 38-28 record with a 37-27 tally. In 2006 the Steelers emerged from a 34-30 AFC North, which placed third to the AFC West's and NFC East's 36-28 records. 2007 saw the Colts win out of a 34-30 AFC South, tying it with the 34-30 AFC West and leaving it behind the 35-29 AFC East. In 2008 the Giants came out of the 40-24 NFC East, a close second to the 42-22 AFC South, which produced three double-digit winning teams. The Steelers won it again in 2009, despite the fact that the AFC North finished a sub .500 31-32-1, leaving it behind four other divisions. And in 2010 the Saints won the Super Bowl coming from the 33-31 NFC South, a mark bested only by the AFC South and NFC East.
With those records in mind, it would appear that identifying the top three divisions in the league is critical to picking the Super Bowl winner. Since 2002, only on one occasion has the championship team come from a division that did not have at least the third best overall win percentage (Pittsburgh 2008 regular season, 2009 Super Bowl)
This season it would appear that the NFC East definitely falls into that category with at least, on paper, three solid teams in Dallas, New York, and Philadelphia. The AFC South also looks strong with the Colts, Titans, and Texans all capable of producing winning records. Only two divisions look to be out of the race as the AFC West and NFC West have several rebuilding projects underway. Pinpointing that third division might be a chore because the AFC East, AFC North, NFC North, and NFC South all have at least two or three teams with a big upside.
