Detroit Lions 2010 NFL Predictions: The more things change, the more they stay the same, at least in Detroit anyway. The Lions, despite coaching and general manager changes, have not produced a winning record since the year 2000 when they went 9-7. 2010 NFL Predictions at SBGglobal.com are not holding out hope for one this year either as the team's win total is presently set at 5.5 with the Under favored at -160 moneyline odds.
Detorit finally showed general manager Matt Millen the door in 2008 after his tenure manufactured an abysmal 42-118
record. Head Coach Rod Marinelli also found the unemployment line when the team followed up on 3-13 and 7-9 tallies with an 0-16 mark in 2008. New management brought in Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz last year to fill Marinelli's shoes and he presided over a 2-14 team in his rookie season as head coach.
Detroit's offense ranked 26th in yards per game (299) and 27th in points per game (16.3) last season thanks in large part to a -18 turnover differential. Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford showed a lot of potential and some serious toughness, but his passes found opposing players far too frequently. The Georgia product threw 20 interceptions in 10 games and, consequently, finished the year with a 61 passer rating.
Stafford, who suffered shoulder and knee injuries last season, should find things a little easier in 2010 as he continues to grow under the guidance of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. He has some weapons around him too in wide receivers Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson, second year tight end Brandon Pettigrew, and rookie running back Jahvid Best.
Detroit's defense did not show any improvement in 2009 under Schwartz or new coordinator Gunther Cunningham, ranking dead last in both points and yards per game allowed. While the Lions are not likely to crack the top 10 anytime soon, they should, without question, progress on defense this season. The team selected defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh with the second overall pick in April's draft and they also acquired free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and defensive tackle Corey Williams to give the front seven a serious upgrade.
Detroit also worked hard this offseason to improve a secondary which gave up a league worst 265.5 yards per game by drafting Iowa cornerback Amari Spievey in third round as well as trading for former Falcon Chris Houston.
Detroit Lions 2010 NFL Predictions: 4-12, Fourth Place NFC North. It is difficult to turn a moribound franchise around in two seasons, but the Lions at least look to be headed in the right direction. Still, this team is two or more years away from competing for the North title.
