2009 NFL Odds: The New England Patriots lost their star quarterback, Tom Brady, in week one last season, but still managed to produce an 11-5 record and second place finish in the AFC East. However, due to a log jam of top tier teams in the conference, the Pats missed the post-season for the first time since the 2002 season when they went 9-7. The Patriots will most likely avoid any uncommon scenarios this year as they are favored -130 on the moneyline to finish over 11.5 wins in Sportsbook.com's New England Patriots 2009 NFL Odds.
New England performed well without Tom Brady running the show a season ago, but his return can only mean good things for the Patriots. Brady has been, arguably, the best quarterback in the league the last several seasons, and his presence should cause an improvement in last season's 25.6 (8th) scoring average. When Brady was under center in 2007, the team cranked out 36.8 per contest.
The Pats offensive line is one of the best in the league and the four mainstays — Logan Mankins, Stephen Neal, Nick Kaczur, and Matt Light — all return. The team added veteran wideout Joey Galloway to compliment Randy Moss and Wes Welker and they also inked longtime Jaguar running back Fred Taylor. Taylor should give the team a formidable trio of ball carriers as he will split carries with Lawrence Maroney and Sammy Morris.
The Patriots defense ranked eighth in the league in scoring defense a year ago, giving up 19.3 per contest while allowing 309 yards per game (10th). The team saw the departure of veteran staples Mike Vrabel (LB/trade), Rodney Harrison (S/retire), and Ellis Hobbs (CB/trade), but added cornerback Shawn Springs and linebacker Tully Banta-Cain.
The front seven, which helped produced 31 sacks last year, should be just as solid as last season with Adalius Thomas, Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Jerod Mayo, and Tedy Bruschi all returning. There might be some slippage in the secondary with Harrison and Hobbs gone, but overall, this group should be one of the more dominant units in the league.
Bill Belichick's troops open the year on September 14th with a home game against the Buffalo Bills. They travel to New York in week two to square off against the Jets, and then return home in weeks three and four to face the Falcons and the Ravens.
