It appears that another bad relationship has ended in divorce. The New York Giants agreed yesterday to send disgruntled tight end Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for second and fifth round picks in next year's draft. Prior to the trade, NFL betting odds at SBGglobal.com listed the Saints at +2500 odds to win the Super Bowl and the Giants at +2000 odds to repeat as champions. The Shockey trade marks the second day in a row of blockbuster dealings. Sunday the R edskins acquired defensive end Jason Taylor from the Dolphins for draft picks as well. Shockey, who sat out the Giants Super Bowl run due to injury, is well known as one of the most outspoken and brash players in the league. He has been known to embarrass both himself and the Giants organization with comments like his referral to Bill Parcells as a "homo." However, his play has always been stellar and he has been one of the most productive tight ends in the league over the first six years of his career. The Giants have known for quite some time that Shockey wanted out of New York, but the organization had to find the right deal if they were going to part ways. Shockey was unhappy with his role in the offense over the last two seasons as he watched his yardage totals slip and his reception numbers remain in the mid to low sixties. In New Orleans, the former Miami Hurricane will be united with an old acquaintance -- Head Coach Sean Payton. Payton was part of the Giants offensive staff during Shockey's rookie year, when the tight end posted career highs in both receptions (74) and receiving yards (894). The trade, assuming Shockey passes his physical and it is approved by the league, will definitely benefit an already potent Saints offense. It also gives quarterback Drew Brees another top tier target aside from receiver Marques Colston. SBGglobal.com has New Orleans win total set at 8.5 with the over a -160, and they are favored to win the NFC South at +135 odds.
