Mike Singletary took over as head coach of the 49ers a little over halfway through the 2008 season and has since guided 
the team to 13 victories, which is just one fewer than the previous regime tallied in nearly two and a half seasons. That development has many believing the former Bear has what it takes to restore some pride in the once great franchise.
In order for that to happen, though, San Francisco's offense must take a big step forward this season. There are certainly some pieces on the roster capable of bringing that about, including running back Frank Gore, tight end Vernon Davis, and wide receiver Michael Crabtree. If quarterback Alex Smith and the offensive line can match the play of those three players, than the 49ers should be in business.
However, that is a big if considering the line paved the way for an average of just 100 rush yards per game a season ago while also allowing 40 sacks. Smith showed improvement last year, throwing for 2350 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions (81.5 passer rating), but he has yet to prove that he can help the team become a winner. The additions of right tackle Anthony Davis and left guard Mike Iupati, both first round picks, might give Smith a chance to prove himself in less hazardous conditions.
San Francisco's defense ranked middle of the pack last season in yards per game allowed at 326, but was a stellar fourth in points per game allowed, giving up an average 17.6. All 11 starters are back for Singletary, including all-world linebacker Patrick Willis (152 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions). The team also added safety Taylor Mays and linebacker Navorro Bowman through the draft. Mays was once a projected as a top 10 pick but fell to the second round; despite the concerns that caused that slip, Mays definitely has the talent to help a secondary that ranked 21st against the pass last year.
