Finally, it's over. Brett Favre is back and he will be suiting up for the New York Jets in 2008. The Packers traded Favre to the Jets last night for a conditional draft pick. New York also released former number one draft choice Chad Pennington. The move immediately improves New York's chances of making the playoffs as the quarterback position was one of their biggest question marks after last season. NFL Betting odds at SBGglobal.com adjusted the Jets odds after the move. Prior to the trade New York was at +3000 odds to win the AFC Championship, now they are listed at +1200 odds.
Apparently Farve and his family expressed some reluctance at playing in a big market lik
e New York, but Jets management convinced him it would be an easy transition. And, while the Jets certainly do not have as complete a roster as Green Bay, they do have some good pieces in place. Receivers Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery are very capable targets and Thomas Jones is both a running and receiving threat out of the backfield.
The Jets get a first ballot Hall of Famer with a reputation as big as New York itself. Favre is perhaps the most widely known football star in the world. Last season he posted a 95.7 passer rating and threw for 4155 yards and 28 touchdowns. If he can put up similar numbers in 2008 than the Jets will almost certainly find themselves playing in the postseason.
For Green Bay fans, and for Favre too, this is the end of a 16 year affair that has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Favre led the Packers to a Super Bowl title in1997 and he also went through very public ordeals with a prescription pain killer addiction as well as the death of his father.
Tonight the Jets will play the Browns, at Cleveland Browns Stadium, in the first preseason contest of the year for both squads. NFL Betting odds at SBGglobal.com for tonight's game:
Jets +3 (-110), OVER 35 (-100), +150 (Moneyline)
Browns -3 (-110), UNDER 35 (-110), -170 (Moneyline)
