NFL Predictions 2009: The Arizona Cardinals came out of nowhere last year to win the NFC Championship and play in the franchise's first Super Bowl. Many people expected an improved team coming into the season, one that could possibly contend for the NFC West title, but nobody envisioned the magical post-season run that the Cardinals put together. Looks like no one is envisioning it this season either. Online bookmaker Sportsbetting.com currently has Arizona favored to finish under 8.5 wins in their Arizona Cardinals NFL Predictions 2009. Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt had to revamp his staff after the team's Super Bowl run earlier this year. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley was tabbed by the Chiefs to replace Herm Edwards and Whisenhunt elected to dismiss defensive coordinator Clancey Pendergast, who subsequently joined Haley in Kansas City.

Whisenhunt chose an unorthodox route to fill Haley's slot, electing to have Russ Grimm serve as a run game coordinator while appointing Mike Miller the pass game coordinator. Whisenhunt will take over the play calling duties, a job he handled his first season in Arizona.

Bill Davis, who had served as the team's linebackers coach, will replace Pendergast.

Offensively, the Cardinals have all the tools to pick up where they left off a season ago. The team ranked third in points per game, fourth in yards per game, and second in passing yards per game. Almost the entire unit returns intact, including quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

The team might, however, employ more of the run game this year after it helped them a great deal in the Playoffs. Arizona had two 100 plus rushing yard games in the post-season, a feat they only accomplished five times during the regular season. First round draft pick Chris Wells also gives them the best option they have had at tailback in quite some time.

The team's defensive numbers were largely unimpressive last year as the squad ranked 19th in points per game allowed (26.6), 28th in yards per game allowed (332), and 22nd in passing yards per game allowed (221). Despite the poor numbers, the defense showed the kind of talent they have throughout the Playoffs. During the Cardinals march to the Super Bowl, the unit's numbers improved almost across the board (332 yards per game allowed to 316.2, 26.6 points per game allowed to 22.2 points, 110 rush yards per game allowed to 72.5, 1.93 sacks per game to 2.5).

Nine starters return this year and there is talent at every level of the defense. A few of the standouts include defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, linebacker Karlos Dansby, and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Arizona opens the 2009 season with a September 13th home game against NFC West rival San Francisco.
