NFL Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles NFC East Preview

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Philadelphia went into 2007 with their usual high expectations, but a harsh NFC East never allowed those expectations to materialize (the Eagles went just 2-4 in division play). The team also had to handle Head Coach Andy Reid's family issues that forced him to take a leave of absence prior to the season. Philadelphia did, however, exhibit their trademark toughness by winning their last three games and getting their record to 8-8. NFL Betting odds at Sportsbook.com have the Eagles at +300 odds to win the NFC East this season and their win total is set at 8.5 with the over a -190.NFL Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles NFC East Preview

Last year the Eagles were quite prolific at accumulating yardage as their 358 yards per game attests. The trouble for the offense was an inability to convert that yardage into points. Philadelphia averaged a respectable 21 points per game, but based on yardage totals that number should have been around 25. The real cause of the Eagles woes, however, was a 19-27 takeaway/giveaway ratio. That stat can change from year to year and the team should correct it in 2008. If they do, Philadelphia will likely be in the middle of the playoff race.

Quarterback Donovan McNaab appears to be healthy and when he is, he is an elite level passer. The team also has one of the best offensive weapons in the league in running back Brian Westbrook. The receiving corps is adequate with Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown leading the way. Ading those two this season will be the team's second round draft choice DeSean Jackson out of Cal.

Defensively the Eagles were a solid unit again in 2007. The offense in Philly seems to get most of the attention, but stellar defensive play has been the real team trademark during the Andy Reid era. Last season they ranked ninth in the league by limiting teams to just 18.8 points per game. The secondary did have some occasional issues, but free agent acquistion Asante Samuel (CB) and a healthy Brian Dawkins (FS) should rectify those problems. Expect the same hard-hitting defense in 2008.

NFL Betting odds at Sportsbook.com have Philadelphia at +2500 odds to win the Super Bowl and +900 odds to win the NFC Championship.

Prediction: 2nd Place NFC East.
