NFL Preseason Week 1: The Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders get their 2009 seasons underway tonight as they square off against each other at the Oakland Coliseum. The two teams clearly have different things to evaluate as the Cowboys were 9-7 last year while the Raiders finished out the year with a 5-11 mark. Online bookmaker BetUS.com, despite the disparity in talent, has Oakland listed as a -130 moneyline favorite in this evening's preseason battle.

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders actually showed some signs of life last year with interim coach Tom Cable at the helm, going 4-3 in their last seven games and closing out the year with back-to-back wins. Cable's performance earned him the head coaching job, but in Oakland the interim title might as well be permanent.

Cable's job security may well depend on how former top pick JaMarcus Russell develops at quarterback. The Raiders will be watching the LSU product closely during the exhibition season and, despite the amount of money they have invested in him, may not hesitate to replace him with off-season acquisition Jeff Garcia if he does not improve his level of play.

Cable has emphasized that there will be heavy competition for the starting spots and quarterback is likely no exception.

"It's on," Cable said. "And everyone's got to fight for a job to get this thing down to 53, the right 53, and inside of that, obviously, who your starters are and so forth."

Dallas Cowboys: Head Coach Wade Phillips begins his third season in Dallas with some big expectations. Phillips may well be coaching for his job this season after the Cowboys missed the Playoff last year with what many considered to be a Super Bowl calibur team.

Dallas has much to work on and evaluate during the preseason as five starters, including wide receiver Terrell Owens, either left or were cut in the off-season. The Cowboys also had 12 picks in this year's draft that will, no doubt, need to see some playing time in the team's exhibition schedule.

This evening's game is set to get underway at 10:00pm ET at the Oakland Coliseum.
