File this report in the non-breaking news breaking news folder. Did anyone expect Brett Favre to really stay retired? It is now official that the 39 year old signal caller is set to sign a deal with the Vikings and see action as early as Friday when Minnesota hosts the Chiefs for their second preseason game.
Favre told the Vikings prior to training camp that he was going to stay retired, but left the door open even then that he could change his mind. Apparantly Minnesota was just waiting for word from the future Hall of Famer as their passing game floundered during camp.
Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress let his position be known on the proceedings, saying the club would sign Favre "in a perfect world."
Favre must have given Childress the heads up this weekend as reports began to emerge that he was indeed headed to Minnesota.
While Favre would appear to be an upgrade over Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson, his age and injury issues certainly make the situation a little dicey. The former Packer and Jet has a small tear in his rotator cuff and he also had surgery in the off-season on his thowing arm. Despite the wear and tear, Favre has obviously indicated to club officials he is ready to roll.
Favre, who threw for 3472 yards and 22 touchdowns with New York last year, joins a team that many considered to be the frontrunner in the NFC North even before his arrival. If he can duplicate his 2007 season in Green Bay (4155 yards, 28 touchdowns, 15 interceptions) than the Vikings could be the top team in the NFC.
