Sportsbook.com has released their 2008 NFL MVP odds for the upcoming football season, and last year's winner, Tom Brady, is the favorite to win the award again this year at +500 odds. There are 39 individual players receiving odds from the online bookmaker as well as the field for the quarterback (+800 odds), running back (+1000 odds), and wide receiver (+5000 odds) positions.
The top10 favorites following Brady are: QB Tony Romo of the Cowboys +700, RB LaDainian Tomlinson of the Chargers +700, QB Peyton Manning of the Colts +800, WR Randy Moss of the Patriots +1000, RB Adrian Peterson of the Vikings +1200, QB Drew Bress of the Saints +1200, QB Eli Manning of the Giants +1200, WR Terrell Owens of the Cowboys +1200, QB Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers +1500, and QB David Garrard of the Jaguars +1500.
The Associated Press has given the MVP award to a defensive player only two times since 1957 (Alan Page 1971, Lawrence Taylor 1986), and they have never given the award to a wide receiver. Sportsbook.com did not list any defensive players with odds, but nine wide receivers are on the list. There are also 16 quarterbacks and 14 running backs with listed odds.
Since 1990, the Associated Press has named a quarterback MVP 13 times and a running back MVP seven times. In 1997 Brett Favre and Barry Sanders were co-MVP and in 2003 Peyton Manning and Steve McNair were co-MVP.
