New Orleans (1-0) offense looked sluggish, at best, in their preseason debut against San Francisco at the Louisiana Superdome last Friday night. But, their first, second and third defensive units were solid as ever. No matter how late in the game it became, the intensity, the energy level and the amount of pressure that was displayed by the Saints‘ defense on the opposing offense never seemed to relinquish. In all, the Saints‘ defense recorded 6 quarterback sacks and 2 interceptions before all was said and done on Friday night’s 24-3 victory over the 49ers. San Francisco was only able to generate 234 total yards of offense against the stout Saints defense. Expect Drew Brees and the Saints‘ starting offense to see significantly more playing time in this second preseason contest that they did in the first one. One of Drew’s favorite targets, WR Marques Colston, will make his 2011 debut in this game, so maybe his presence will spark a few more positive plays from the offense than were witnessed in the Dome last Friday night from the Saints.
Houston (1-0) had a very strong defensive showing under new DC Wade Phillips in Monday’s 20-16 home win over the New York Jets. Houston had seven sacks and 16 quarterback pressures on the night, with the team’s backup crew making the most impact in the game. Coach Gary Kubiak said that he will play his starters for at least the first half of Saturday's game. WR Andre Johnson missed the opener on Monday night against the Jets to rest a finger injury, but it is believed that he will make his preseason debut Saturday. Steve Slaton is unlikely to play on Saturday; he's been dealing with a hamstring problem that's kept him sidelined.
