The New York Giants host the Chicago Bears tonight, Monday August 22nd, in week 2 preseason action. The last time these two teams met was back on October 3, 2010 when the Giants defeated the Bears 17-3. Chicago (1-0) beat the Buffalo Bills 10-3 at home in their preseason opener. Jay Cutler saw little action as their backups were given a chance to show what their made of. Nathan Enderle completed 7 of 10 for 110 yards with a TD, while Caleb Hanie made 3 of 7 for 32 yards. Cutler will start tonight as they look to develop some rhythm. Sure, pass blocking plays into that, but Cutler needs to establish some chemistry, especially with newcomer Roy Williams, who started to come on in practice last week. Perhaps we will get a better idea how Johnny Knox will be deployed after he got brief work with the starters last week. Should they even play Cutler in the preseason while they're still building their O-line…he's gonna be getting hit enough in the regular season. He only played one series during the Bills game and already got sacked. Bear’s defensive end Corey Wootton will not play on Monday after suffering a knee injury that will keep him away for at least a month after Chicago’s first preseason game.
New York (0-1) lost 10-20 in Carolina. QB Eli Manning played five series against Carolina completing 4 of 9 passes for 36 yards while backup Sage Rosenfels completed 13 of 19 for 129 yards. A year ago, Jay Cutler was sacked an NFL-record nine times in the first half of a 17-3 loss at New Meadowlands Stadium. When camp opened the Giants were concerned about offensive cohesion and firepower, and camp closes with the same concerns in the same areas: Left tackle, tight end (with the loss of Kevin Boss) and third receiver (with the loss of Steve Smith). The way the Giants made lukewarm offers to Plaxico Burress and Smith must mean they believe they have enough on hand, which means they must believe in Hixon, who in 2008 caught 43 passes. There's not a great deal of urgency around receiver Travis Beckum, but he does seem to sense entering year No. 3 it's his time to do it — for Coughlin, for Eli Manning, for himself.
