The Ravens finished 11-5 last year and made the AFC Championship game only to lose top Pittsburgh Steelers 23-14. Ever since the Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in 2000, they have established a reputation of having one of the top defenses in the league each season. However, they have never had that star QB to build a franchise around. Kyle Boller, Elvis Grbac, and Anthony Wright ring a bell. Now that QB Joe Flacco is fresh off an excellent rookie season, he’s the man at the helm to get the Ravens back to the big dance. Flacco had 14 TD’s with 2,971 yards passing to become the first rookie QB to win his first two playoff games. On a bad note they lost WR Derrick Mason to retirement and they’ll have a big hole to fill. He had five TD’s with 1,037 passing yards. To make things even more complicated for the Ravens, WR Drew Bennett decided to retire just three days after signing with the team. As of now, they will have to rely on fifth-year wide-out Mark Clayton and fourth-year wideout Demetrius Williams for the time being. Their offense finished last season ranked 18th in total yards gained, while their running game was fourth best in the NFL.
On defense they were ranked in the top five in every aspect of defense. They allowed the second least amount of total yards per-game; they were third best at stopping the rush and second best at preventing the pass. Baltimore’s defensive coordinator Rex Ryan left town to become the head coach of the Jets. The Ravens hope that ex- linebackers coach Greg Mattison can keep the successful system intact as the new defensive coordinator, but this is his first time holding the position in the NFL after solid college stints with Michigan, Notre Dame and Florida. However, with the likes of Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Ed Reed still in town, the Ravens defense figures to be a hard-hitting and game-changing unit once again.
