The Cleveland Browns are still in limbo as to who their starting QB will be. QB Brady Quinn was supposed to be their franchise starter, but after a breakout season in 2007 by QB Derek Anderson the Browns still aren’t sure. The Browns ended last season 10-6 falling one game short of a Wild Card berth. The Browns selected QB Brady Quinn, from Notre Dame, with the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, it appeared that he would be the quarterback of the future. The same year QB Derek Anderson had a breakout season, throwing for 3,787 yards with 29 TD’s. During the 2008 season Anderson flopped, he started just nine games, throwing for 1,615 yards and nine TD’s. Quinn was given a chance to start a game and was sidelined with a broken finger. Now they have two high paid QB’s with the big decision of who to start. WR Braylon Edwards returns to the Browns squad, he had three TD’s with 873 yards receiving last season, after hauling in 80 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 TD’s in 2007. All eyes will be on Edwards now that they lost TE Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay. The Browns took WR Brian Robiskie in the second round and the team followed that by selecting WR Mohamed Massaquoi. Veteran Jamal Lewis is much closer to empty than full on the career gas tank and the lack of clarity in the passing game won't help him any.
On defense Coach Eric Mangini brought in seemingly every Jets player that was willing to move to the Browns. Through trades and signings, no less than six former Jets will be suiting up for Cleveland's defense in 2009 if they all make the squad. The club was terrible against the run but respectable against the pass in 2008. They'll need an improved pass rush to keep the other team guessing if they want to improve in 2009. They'll also need young players like safety Brodney Pool, linebackers Kamerion Wimbley and D'Qwell Jackson and cornerbacks Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald to continue developing if the squad is to see a big improvement on the year.
