2009-2010 Carolina Panthers Super Bowl XLIV Odds, Picks & Prediction

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The Carolina Panthers did little in the offseason and stood by with their loaded and talented squad that will contend in the NFC South. QB Jake Delhomme signed an extension with the Panthers and he’s pumped about this season. NFL oddsmakers at Bodog.com have the Carolina Panthers at 22/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLIV. The Panthers ended last season 12-4 where they lost to Arizona in the Divisional final. QB Jake Delhomme had 15 TD’s with 3,288 passing yards as he looks forward to another great season. The Panthers offense in 2009 will center largely on the dynamic pair of RB's DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. They are as good a one two punch as you will find in the NFL, and they are running behind an offensive line that is intact in Carolina for the first time in years. Between Williams and Stewart they combined for 28 TD’s and 2,351 yards rushing. As for their passing game they’ll still have WR Steve Smith, and old reliable WR Mushin Muhammed, who combined for 11 TD’S with 2,344 receiving yards. The Panthers did lose some depth on their offensive line when they lost Geoff Hangartner and back up Jeremy Bridges. Longtime Panther RB and special teamer Nick Goings is gone as well, but the loss will be on special teams. Wide out D.J. Hackett is gone after a disappointed tenure with the Panthers, and outside of that, the offense is unchanged.

On defense they signed an extension to Julius Peppers and they picked up Florida State DE Everette Brown during the draft. The thought of Brown and Peppers could be a nightmare for the rest of the NFC. Their linebackers are among the best in the NFL. Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, and Nai’ il Diggs, and Dan Conner hold down this group and will be solid once again in 2009. Their secondary may be a little suspect and they’ll have to step it up.

The Bottom Line: The Panthers are expected to be first or second in the NFC South, but they have a tougher schedule where they’ll face only one team that had a losing record in 2008.
