2011 NFL Super Bowl Predictions

by Matt Foust on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

2011 NFL Super Bowl Predictions: With the start of the NFL regular season a mere 15 days away, playoff speculation is swirling as the Colts, Patriots, Chargers, Jets, Ravens, Saints, Vikings, Packers, and Cowboys have all been tabbed as postseason qualifiers. However, 2011 NFL Super Bowl Predictions at BetUS.com have a championship meeting between the Colts and Saints as the mostly likely pairing. An Indianapolis/New Orleans rematch is presently listed at +1800 moneyline odds in the bookmaker's Super Bowl Matchups.

Indianapolis Colts vs New Orleans Saints (+1800): While both of these teams should be powerhouses in their respective 2011 NFL Super Bowl Predictionsconferences, the likelihood, at least based upon Super Bowl history, of the two of them meeting in back-to-back championship games is not good. Only two teams in the 44 year history of the big game have met in back-to-back Super Bowls, those being Dallas and Buffalo in 1993-94. So, mathematically speaking, a rematch between the Saints and Colts has a 2.2 percent chance of taking place.

That said, there is a reasonably well established precedent for a team either winning or losing the Super Bowl and returning to the game the following season. Dallas has lost the game only to return and win it (1971, 1972) and then won it only to return and lose it (1978, 1979). Miami lost the 1972 Super Bowl and returned to the championship in 1973 and 1974 where it emerged victorious on both occasions. Green Bay (1997, 1998) and Washington (1983, 1984) join Dallas as teams that have won the championship but failed to defend it.

Based upon pure numbers, the Saints are the most likely of these two squads to return to the Super Bowl. Defending champions have revisited the Super Bowl and successfully defended their title eight times (Steelers twice 1975-76, 1979-80). Factoring in the Packers, Redskins, and Cowboys failed title defenses, 11 teams have appeared in back-to-back championships where they experienced a win on the first occasion. That history would give the Saints a 25 percent chance of appearing in Arlington next February.

The Colts, however, fall into a 16 percent category as the Cowboys, Dolphins, Vikings, Broncos, and Bills have all either lost back-to-back Super Bowls (back-to-back-to-back in Buffalo's case) or lost it only to win it the next year.
