The Denver Broncos finished last season 8-8 and missed the playoffs for the third straight year. QB Jay Cutler broke John Elway’s record last year throwing for 4,526 yards with 25 TD’s. During the offseason new head coach Josh McDaniels attempted to get QB Matt Cassel from New England and Cutler felt this was an insult. Ever since the incident, Cutler had felt unwelcomed by McDaniels in Denver. Cutler was traded to Chicago for two first-round picks and a third-round pick along with Orton to complete the deal. QB Kyle Orton had 18 TD’s with 2,972 passing yards last season. In the 33 games he has played in during his first three seasons in the league, Orton has thrown for 5,319 yards and 30 touchdowns. On top of that, he has a career record of 21-12 as a starter. The Broncos had one of the busiest offseasons in the NFL. Not only did they acquire Cutler from the Bears, but they also signed 17 free agents. The Broncos new signings include Brian Dawkins, Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington, LaMont Jordan, Brandon Lloyd, and Chris Simms. All players should have contributing roles for the Broncos for the upcoming 2009 season.
On defense the Broncos had one of the worst, they finished ranked 30th in points allowed and 29th in total yards given up. They should use their two top draft picks to bolster their already weak defense. But, their defense will feature many new faces during the 2009 season, and it will also be extremely helpful to have a healthy Champ Bailey for an entire season. The Broncos picked up former Eagles standout Brian Dawkins and Andre Goodman was also brought in to replace Dre Bly at cornerback. The Bailey, Goodman and Dawkins defensive backfield will be the strength of the club and should allow the Bronocs to blitz early and often.
