The Lions have lost 23 of their last 24 games played during the regular season. They enter the 2009 with a handful of new faces to help recover from the franchise's most embarrassing season in team history. QB Matthew Stafford was drafted out of Georgia. During his three years with the Bulldogs, he had 48 TD’s with 7,481 yards passing to go along with six rushing TD’s and 204 yards rushing. It’ll take some time to adjust from college to the NFL, but with one of the best wide receivers in the league by his side in Calvin Johnson he could turn out to be a Matt Ryan. Last season, Johnson led the league with 12 TD catches and finished with 1,331 receiving yards. Matt Stafford isn’t guaranteed to start and will have to compete with QB Daunte Culpepper, who had four TD’s with 786 passing yards in their final five games. Rookie RB Kevin Smith was a decent surprise for the Lions with over 900 yards rushing and 8 TD’s
On defense they have a coach with a defensive mind. Jim Schwartz had been the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans since the 2001 season. There are some new acquisitions to the lineup that can start paying dividends right away, such as LB Julian Peterson and LB Larry Foote, CB Philip Buchanon and DT Grady Jackson. They shouldn’t be giving up 32 ppg this season.
Odds to win NFC North – 15/1
