by Matt Foust on Friday, August 28th, 2009

NFL Preseason Week 3: The Patriots and Redskins are ready to mix it up tonight at FedEX Field in Washington D.C. The host Redskins are coming off a 17-13 home win against the Steelers while the Pats are recovering from a 7-6 loss at home to Cincinnati. Tonight's game is scheduled to get underway at 8:00pm ET and will be broadcast live on CBS. NFL Preseason Week 3: New England Patriots vs Washington Redskins NFL Picks, Odds & Predictions at Sportsbook.com have Bill Belichick's team listed as a -3 against the spread favorite.

New England Patriots: New England followed up their 27-25 win at NFL Preseason Week 3: New England Patriots vs Washington Redskins NFL Picks, Odds & PredictionsPhilly with a lackluster, low-scoring home loss to the Bengals. Tom Brady completed 4-of-8 passes for 57 yards in the defeat while the team racked up 336 total yards. The Patriots, which averaged 4.5 yards per carry for the game, were victimized by nine penalites and a turnover.

New England's defense had a mixed effort too, countering four sacks by giving up 173 yards rushing to the Bengals ground attack.

The Patriots are expected to play their starting unit into the second half this evening with the regular season just a couple of weeks away. According to Brady that is Belichick's standard practice for a third preseason game.

"I think we're (the starters) going to play quite a bit," Brady said. "That's traditionally what we've always done and that's what we're expecting to do."

Washington Redskins: The Redskins rebounded from a 23-0 loss at Baltimore in their first preseason game by beating the Steelers 17-13 last Saturday in the nation's capitol. Despite the win, Washington's first team offense did not impress as quarterback Jason Campbell hit on just one of his seven pass attempts for 10 yards. Clinton Portis did have a nice effort, though, gaining 26 yards in five carries.

The Redskins defense limited the Steelers to 238 total and 139 passing yards, a far cry from the 500 and 399 they gave up to Baltimore in week one of the exhibition season. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, however, did not play due to an ankle injury he suffered in practice.

Washington's biggest goal this evening will be getting the first team offense into the end zone. The Redskins starting offense has yet to punch one in this preseason and that does not bode well for a team that averaged just 16.6 points a season ago.
