Indianapolis Colts: Jim Caldwell's professional head coaching debut 
was not the stuff of dreams as his Colts laid a 13-3 egg against the Vikings at Lucas Oil Stadium. In Caldwell's defense, the starters hardly saw the field in the lopsided loss. That, however, was not the case in Indy's second game, a 23-15 victory over the Eagles.
Peyton Manning, who threw just two passes against the Vikes, completed 10-of-14 in the first half of last Thursday's contest for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The offensive barrage, which also included two catches for 90 yards from Reggie Wayne, led to a 17-7 halftime lead.
The Colts defense, with the exception of a 39 yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNaab to DeSean Jackson, also played well in the first half.
Detroit Lions: The Lions narrowly won their first exhibition outing 27-26 against the Falcons at Ford Field. There was nothing narrow about their loss last Saturday night in Cleveland, though. The Browns went on to win 27-10, but they hung 20 points on Detroit in the first quarter. The Lions managed just three first half points.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford followed up a satisfactory NFL debut with a horrendous effort at Cleveland. The top pick in this year's draft completed just five of 13 pass attempts against the Browns for 34 yards and an interception. He finished the day with a 14.6 passer rating.
The Lions defense gave up 194 yards rushing (6.7 yards per carry) for the game. Browns rookie tailback James Davis had 12 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown.
