The Vikings finished first in the NFC North with a 10-6 record only to lose to Philadelphia during Wildcard weekend. They’ll rely on veteran QB Bret Favre to get them into the playoffs. With the NY Jets last season Favre had 22 TD’s after throwing for 3,472 yards, but he threw just as many interceptions 22. Because of this the Jets collapsed losing four of their final five games. Despite Favre’s interceptions last season their offense will be run through RB Adrian Peterson, who had 1,760 rushing yards with 10 TD’s. With Peterson, the club finished 5th in rushing yards and 12th in points scored. Four players on the club caught 40 or more passes in 2008, but none more than 53. The Vikings need somebody to step up, and they hope the versatile play making ability of rookie WR Percy Harvin could make him that man. WR Percy Harvin has impressive speed and open field running, and his ability to play multiple positions; he is regarded as a potentially explosive player. He was on national championship teams in both Pop Warner and NCAA football and on a Virginia State champion football team. With the spread of the Wild Cat formation and with Peterson in the backfield, it will be interesting how the University of Florida speedster is put to use.
On defense they remain largely intact from a strong 2008 unit, despite losing safety Darren Sharper, who was the club's fourth leading tackler. CB Antoine Winfield is one of the best in the game finishing with 95 sacks, 81 solo and 14 assisted, but he needs help from the rest of the unit to help the Vikings get stronger against the pass. The futures of DT’s Kevin Williams and Pat Williams could include suspensions, which would hurt the Vikings significantly in the opening weeks of the season. Jared Allen is one of the best defensive ends in the game and another double digit sack season, 14.5 sacks, will be necessary for the team to maintain form.
