The Patriots though their season was over when Tom Brady went down for the count during their season opener. Back-up QB Matt Cassel filled in nicely and the team still managed to go 11-5, which would normally be good enough to make the playoffs although the team barely missed the cut. QB Tom Brady had 50 TD’S in 2007 after throwing for 4,806 yards. He’ll have WR Randy Moss and WR Wes Welker to help ease the transition back. In 2007 Brady connected for 31 TD’s to Welker and Moss, and with Cassel at the helm they connected for only 14 TD’s. The Pats grabbed up underrated veteran RB Fred Taylor, from Jacksonville. He had 143 carries for 556 yards with one TD with the Jags. In a reduced role he should be able to stay fresh while proving to be a difference maker for the club.
On defense the Patriots will be missing some of their big names and some of their fiery leadership with the Mike Vrabel and Rodney Harrison gone, they combined for 109 tackles. However, Pro Bowl lineman Richard Seymour remains, but Tedy Bruschi has officially announced his retirement. Jerod Mayo was a revelation in his rookie season, leading the team with 128 tackles. The team hopes to have a healthy Adalius Thomas as well, which could return the unit to dominance. The Patriots brought in two cornerbacks, Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, to patch up the secondary.
