could not have been encouraged by the defensive effort, even though it was the Saints, as New Orleans put up 25 first downs and a jaw dropping 552 total yards. Drew Brees and company had their way against San Diego both on the ground and through the air, averaging 4.6 yards per carry and 9.4 yards per pass.
Things were not near as dire offensively with Philip Rivers throwing for 167 yards and a touchdown and rookie running back Ryan Mathews rushing for 43 yards in his third preseason game. Veteran tight end Antonio Gates also caught five passes for 66 yards in the loss.
Most of San Diego's starters will sit out this evening as Turner and his staff continue to evaluate fringe players in an effort to get the roster to 53 players.
"I think there have been some decisions or some evaluations that have been done, and they are incomplete, and the final part of that comes Thursday night," Turner said.
San Francisco, which has been dealing with a much publicized dispute between tight end Vernon Davis and wide receiver Michael Crabtree, comes into tonight's game a perfect 3-0.
The Niners beat Bay Area rival Oakland 28-24 last Saturday night thanks to a 17 point second quarter, which saw seventh round draft pick Phillip Adams return a punt 83 yards for a touchdown and Alex Smith connect on a 16 yard scoring strike with Josh Morgan.
San Francisco also had an impressive night on the ground, rushing for 165 yards in 33 carries, including a 49 yard scamper by Frank Gore.
