Top 5 Match Ups: Thursday, September 4, 2008
Washington Redskins at NY Giants (-4) All the pressure as reigning Super Bowl Champs is squarely on Eli Manning. They went 3-5 SU at Giants Stadium last year and they start the 2008 season at home, without Jeremy Shockey, Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora. Will their home field opener be an advantage or flop? The Redskins beat the Giants, on the road, last season as part of their four game win streak that got them into the playoffs. Redskins are 2-6-2 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 1. Giants are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 meetings. The Giants are listed as -4 point home favorites over the Redskins with the over/under set at 41.

NY Jets (-3) at Miami Dolphins The big question surround the Jets season is, how will Bret Favre perform? Favre went 1-1 SU in two preseason games were he made 14 of 18 passes for 146 yards with one touchdown. For the Dolphins, more than half the team is new. The Dolphins have a new coach in Tony Sparano, a new quarterback in Chad Pennington and a new cornerstone in tackle Jake Long, the top overall pick in the draft. Only one player in the offensive line and two players in the defensive front seven return at the same position. They even have a new kicker in Dan Carpenter. There’s only one place the Dolphins can go from last year, that’s up! Dolphins are 8-3-2 ATS in their last 13 games in Week 1. Jets are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Miami. The NY Jets are -3 point road favorites over the Dolphins with the over/under set at 36 points. Chicago Bears (+9 ½) at Indianapolis Colts The Colts biggest question is whether to kick to the Bears kick returner Devin Hester or kick a squib. Think back a year and a half ago when Hester became the first player in history to start a Super Bowl by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Colts won’t make the same mistake twice. Chicago Bears are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 1. Colts are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Week 1. The Colts are listed as -9 ½ point home favorites over the Bears with the over/under set at 44 points.
Kansas City Chiefs (+15 ½) at New England Patriots Everything seems to be focused on Tom Brady’ foot, he didn’t play any preseason games, which they went 0-4. Coach Belicheck still hasn’t confirmed if Brady will start. Now I hear he has food poisoning, what’s next? They still have an all-star offense and a great defense, they should do ok. The Chiefs have 22 new players, including 15 rookies, on their roster and it’s going to take a while for these players to gel as a team. Chiefs are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 meetings. Patriots are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September. The Patriots are listed as -15 ½ point favorites over the Chiefs with the over/under set at 44 ½ points.
Dallas Cowboys (-5 ½) at Cleveland Browns Newly acquired bad ass cornerback Adam Pacman Jones is back in the NFL and may be rusty. Terrell Owens, Tony Romo and TE Jason Witten are ready for action. The Browns had a great year in 2007, with Derek Anderson leading them to a surprising 10-6 record. They’ve made great additions to solidify their offensive line. They have players back that were injured all last season which should give them a greater boost. Browns are 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 1. Cowboys are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September. The Cowboys are listed as -5 ½ point road favorites over the Browns with the over/under set at 49 points.
