It was a dismal season last year for the St.Louis Rams finishing 2-14 with many disgruntled players wanting out. This season the Rams are placing a lot of faith and responsibility on a largely young and unproven wide receiving core, led by QB Marc Bulger. The St.Louis Rams offense ranked 30th in points scored and their defense ranked 31st in points allowed, meaning there's a ton of room for improvement on both sides of the ball. QB Marc Bulger managed 11 TD’s after throwing for 2,720 yards. His main WR Torry Holt has left the Rams and their passing game will be up to WR Donnie Avery. Avery did just as good as Torry Holt last season with 53 catches for 674 yards with three TD’s. RB Steven Jackson had a slow start to the year missing four games, but still proved himself to be one of the best running backs in the league when healthy. Jackson had 1,042 rushing yards with seven TD’s while the versatile runningback also had 40 catches for 379 yards with one TD. They’ll still have a weak offense as their focus has shifted to defense.
On defense the Rams new coach Steve Spagnuolo promises to provide more of a focus on creative and aggressive defensive scheming than on an all out offensive attack. Spagnuolo has brought in several players from the Giants, where he was the defensive coordinator. This includes strong safety James Butler, a versatile player who should help strengthen the backfield. The Rams also picked up linebacker James Laurinaitis in the second round, a player with strong fundamentals and a high football I.Q. Laurinaitis was a three-year starting middle linebacker at Ohio State. He was awarded the 2006 Nagurski Trophy, the 2007 Butkus Award for top college linebacker, the 2008 Lott Trophy for the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year, and named an All-American in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Spagnuolo's schemes should help Chris Long continue to develop, and the Rams will need Long and Laurinaitis to both perform at a high level if the defense is going to be respectable. Long had 40 tackles with four sacks last season, while they lost their top defenseman Pisa Tinoisamoa.
Odds to win NFC West – 39/4
