Last season, the Detroit Lions ranked seventh in the NFL in passing but it is hard to put too much credence in this stat considering they were often trying to play catch-up. With Lions quarterback Jon Kitna talking about 10 wins and the drafting of stud receiver Calvin Johnson, there seems to be a bit of optimism in Mo Town for the 2007 NFL regular season. Sportsbook.com has posted the Detroit Lions betting odds to win Super Bowl XLII at 75 to 1.
“I have been seeing alot of cappers hyping the Lions as a playoff team and I think that's ridiculous.,” stated Point-Spreads.com NFL Expert Handicapper Brad Marchetti. “This team is better than last year but taking the betting odds of them winning the division is not a smart play .”
Kitna should put up some impressive numbers with Roy Williams pairing up with Johnson as an extremely talented receiving duo. The running attack was putrid last season ranking dead last in the NFL in rushing with just 70.6 yards a game. These numbers should go up with the addition of OT George Foster and RB’s Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett to go along with Kevin Jones.
The defense was a disaster last season ranking 28th in yardage and 30th in points. If the Lions are going to get anywhere near the 10 win prediction of Kitna, DT Shaun Rogers needs to return to his dominant form and free agent signee DE Dewayne White and Kalimba Edwards needs to produce. Linebackers Ernie Sims and Boss Bailey are as athletic as any duo in the league but Bailey needs to start living up to the hype that surrounded him coming out of college.
Although 10 wins might be a stretch, the Lions have enough talent to finally make some big time improvements.
