The Redskins tried to land QB Jay Cutler from Denver and were unsuccessful so they’re sticking with QB Jason Campbell. Campbell had 13 TD’s with 3,245 yards passing last season. Running back Clinton Portis continued to assert himself as one of the underrated offensive studs in the league. He had nine TD’s after running for 1,487 yards giving the Redskins an 8th ranked running game. They’ll still have the triple threat of receivers in Santana Moss, Chris Cooley and Antwaan Randle El. Moss was their top receiver with 79 catches for 1,044 yards and six TD’s, while Cooley and Randle El combined for five TD’s. For once the Redskins will have a consistent coaching staff, on offense, in front of them, which the Redskins hope will lead to increased playmaking ability and downfield opportunities. Clinton Portis takes a pounding both running the ball and providing the protection, and one has to wonder how much is left in the tank even after a superb 2008 season.
On defense their largest move of the off season was made as soon as free agency began, as the Redskins wasted no time gobbling up Albert Haynesworth from Tennessee. Haynesworth had 51 tackles with a whopping 8.5 sacks with three forced fumbles. They also used their first draft pick on defensive end Brian Orakpo, from Texas, who as a senior in 2008 he was the Associated Press Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He also was the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the best defensive player, the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the top defensive end, and the Lombardi Award, given to the best lineman or linebacker. With the two additions to the defensive front, the team will have a much superior pass rush from last season's. The Redskins also hope this leads to more turnover opportunities for defensive backs LaRon Landry, Carls Rogers, DeAngelo Hall and Fred Smoot. Whether or not Hall can play at a high level and keep his emotions in check could go a long way towards either strengthening or undermining the unit.
