The Seattle Seahawks season depends solely on the health of QB Matt Hasselbeck, he participated in just his second full practice since the injury occurred nearly a month ago in a short workout. Last year Hasselbeck went on to set team records with 352 completions, 562 attempts and 3,966 passing yards, despite sitting out most of the 2007 preseason. If Hasselbeck can stay healthy, the Seahawks appear to have an excellent chance to reach the postseason for the sixth straight year, the longest run of any NFC team. The Seahawks have other problems on their offense, leading returning receiver Bobby Engram is out indefinitely with a broken shoulder, and Ben Obomanu is out for the year because of a broken collarbone. They picked up some new runningbacks after they released RB Shawn Alexander, the Seahawks signed T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones in the offseason. The Seahawks have a well balanced defense with defensive end Patrick Kerney coming off a 14 1/2-sack season, Marcus Trufant having blossomed into a top-tier cornerback and Lofa Tatupu anchoring the linebackers.
The Buffalo Bills have given QB Trent Edwards the job as starting quarterback, who beat out J.P. Losman midway through last year. Edwards went 5-5 as a starter last season, throwing seven touchdowns while being picked off eight times, but he did show promise and great poise as a rookie. The Bills finished 30th in the NFL with 277 yards per game, and their 20 non-special team touchdowns were the fewest during a 16-game season in franchise history. The Bills are hoping WR James Hardy will relieve some pressure from WR Lee Evans. RB Marshawn Lynch is back and looking to build on last year’s 1,115 yards rushing, a team-high seven touchdowns while finishing fifth in the AFC with 85.8 yards rushing per game, all this despite missing three contests due to a sprained left ankle. The Bills solidified their defense by adding tackle Marcus Stroud, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, and linebacker Kawika Mitchell.
Recent Trends to Consider:
- Over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.
- Underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
- Seahawks are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games in September.
