NFL Week 1 Odds: New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins

by Matt Foust on Saturday, September 6th, 2008

The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins kick off their NFL seasons with an old-fashioned AFC East slugfest. The Dolphins will play host to the Jets at 1:00pm ET on Sunday, September 7, at Dolphin Stadium in Florida. The game can be seen on CBS. NFL Week 1 odds at Sportsbook.com have the Jets as a -3 road favorite in this division contest.NFL Week 1 Odds: New York Jets vs Miami Dolphins

The Jets are coming off a disastrous 4-12 season, Head Coach Eric Mangini's second with the club, but they have reason for hope. The team traded for Brett Favre in the off season, and he has looked outstanding in his short time with the franchise. With Favre under center the Jets have an entirely different look on offense and they certainly have enough talent on that side of the ball to put some points on the scoreboard. The defense should be improved too with the additions of Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, and Vernon Ghoulston.

As bad as the Jets 2007 season was, the Dolphins had it worse. They achieved new lows in futility last year as anything that could go wrong did go wrong. As a result Cam Cameron was fired at the season's end and Miami ownership brought in Bill Parcells to clean up the mess, not as coach, but as executive vice president of football operations. Parcells brought in Cowboys assistant coach Tony Sparano to lead the team and things appear to be headed in the right direction. There will be some growing pains, but Miami should show improve as the year progresses.

Key Matchup: The Dolphins depleted defensive line must find a way to get some pressure on Favre.  If they do not it will be a long day for Miami and they will become susceptible to Thomas Jones and the Jets ground attack as the game wears on.

NFL Week 1 Trend: The Jets are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games at Miami.
