2009 NFL Predictions: Seattle Seahawks NFC West Betting Odds

by Thomas Jensen on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

2009 NFL Predictions Seattle Seahawks NFC West Betting Odds: Everything that could go wrong for the Seattle Seahawks did in 2008. The receiving corps was a decimated by injuries, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was able to play just seven games and defensive lineman Patrick Kearney also was limited to just seven appearances. New head coach Jim Mora will look to quickly make 2008 a distant memory and return the Seahawks to playoff contention. The 2009 NFL Predictions experts at online sportsbook SBG Global have the Seattle Seahawks +3000 odds to win the 2010 Super Bowl.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS – NFC WEST
2008 Season Record: 4-12, third in NFC West
Offense: 7
Defense: 6
Special Teams: 9
Coaching: 6
2009 NFL Predictions: 7-9
OVER 7½ WINS: -130 odds
UNDER 7½ WINS: EVEN

Pros: Early indications are that Hasselbeck is healthy and ready to go in 2009. He will have a new weapon in 2009 with the addition of receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (92 catches, 904 yards for Cincinnati in 2008). Tight end John Carlson caught 55 passes in his rookie campaign.  With the addition of first round pick Aaron Curry, the linebacker corps of Curry, Lofa Tatupu and LeRoy Hill could emerge as one of the best units in the league.

Cons: The Seahawks ranked 25th in the NFL in scoring offense and 25th in points allowed last season after ranking in the top 10 in both categories the previous season. Injuries were a big reason for the drop-off, but the Seahawks have also made moves to strengthen the defensive line and receiving corps. Once a consistent strength, the running game was a major disappointment in 2008. Former 1,000-yard rusher Julius Jones gained only 698 yards in his first season with the Seahawks.

Surprise Stat: The Seahawks played three games at 1 p.m. East Coast time in 2008 and lost all three by a combined score of 99-35.

Outlook: Given that the Seahawks had made five straight playoff appearances prior to 2008, the decline in 2008 could be a one-year slide. However, the Seahawks do have a lot of older veterans and a return to previous levels is not necessarily guaranteed for many of the veterans.

Draft Overview: Recognizing the need to get younger, the Seahawks did a nice job addressing needs through the draft. In addition to Curry, offensive lineman Max Unger, chosen in the second round out of Oregon, should see action right away. The selection of Penn State receiver Deon Butler also could pay dividends as he provides another receiving option.

Overall Outlook: Before finishing third a year ago, the Seahawks had claimed four straight NFC West Division titles. The division has not been particularly strong in recent years, so if Seattle can avoid another run of injuries, they could contend with Arizona and San Francisco for the title.

Key to Success: Matt Hasselbeck has made three Pro Bowl appearances in eight seasons with the Seahawks. If he can return to previous from, the offense should significantly improve on their performance from a year ago.

Intangibles: After registering 14.5 sacks in his first season in Seattle in 2007, Patrick Kearney had five sacks in seven games in 2008.  His return to previous form would help the Seahawks defense much in the way the presence of Hasselbeck will help the offense.
