Tennessee picked up Matt Hasselbeck to accompany a mediocre receiving core and a premier running back, Tennessee’s offense might finally have what it takes to break through. The team’s defensive schemes have always worked, and it’s not unusual to see the Titans among the NFL’s top defensive teams. But since their Superbowl appearance at the start of the decade, the team has lacked one thing, a consistent quarterback. Now, with a veteran at the helm, the Titans are looking to right the ship and get back to the big game. While back up Kerry Collins is a veteran, his statistics are nowhere near to those of Hasselbeck. He played in the NFC West, which is known for its lackluster offensive talent and strong defensive rosters—it’s not easy for any quarterback to succeed in that division. His frequent injuries can be accredited to a poor offensive line, but the truth is, Hasselbeck’s best years came when he played with an elite running back. RB Chris Johnson will be monitored by running backs coach Jim Skipper during the Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars because the Titans do not want to overload Johnson and injure him. "We'll take the actions that we have to during the course of the game," said offensive coordinator Chris Palmer regarding Johnson's amount of work. Johnson has done well against the Jaguars in the past, rushing 111 times for 632 yards, good for a 5.7 yards per carry. The best game of Johnson's career – a 228 yard outing in 2009 – came against the Jaguars.
Jacksonville released veteran quarterback David Garrard and will turn the starting job over to Luke McCown, who outplayed Garrard and rookie Blaine Gabbert in the preseason. But McCown played mostly with and against second- and third-teamers. McCown completed 12 of 18 passes for 133 yards, with two touchdowns, no interceptions and no sacks. The Jags will ultimately rely on their star running backs for their game plan. Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew finished the 2010 regular season with a total of 1324 yards and 5 touchdowns, but there are concerns that he’s getting too many carries, putting too much of a toll on his body. The Titans were slightly better stopping the run on defense, allowing an average of 115 yards per game to opposing running backs, while the Jaguars surrendered 121 rushing yards per game on average.
