The Brady Bunch is no more! The New England Patriots announced yesterday that QB Tom Brady will undergo season ending surgery on his left knee. Now it’s up to backup QB Matt Cassel as the Patriots hit the road to take on the newly revamped New York Jets, on Sunday September 14. There’s a massive shift in the AFC East as the Pats are no longer the favorites to finish on top. NFL Oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com have the NY Jets as -2 ½ point home favorites over the New England Patriots with the over/under listed at 36 points. At the start of the NFL preseason the Pats were 3-1 favorites to win the 2009 Super Bowl, since Tom Brady’ injury their odds have shifted from 3-1 to 12-1. They opened the season as the 8-5 favorite to win the AFC Conference and now they’re listed at 6-1.
The Pats (1-0) were a whopping -16 ½ point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs during Week 1of the 2008 NFL season. Now with Brady’ out, the power of the AFC East and the Super Bowl favorites are no more. Backup QB Matt Cassel took over for Brady and barely managed to squeak out a win against the much weaker KC Chiefs. Without Brady, the Patriots no longer are the Patriots. They don't dominate. They don't intimidate. They don't score at will or do the things that demand comparisons to the greatest teams in league history. Cassel hasn’t started a game in four years; against the Chiefs he completed 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown.
The Jets (1-0) are the toast of the NFL after QB Bret Favre’ impressive debut with his new team, he completed 15 of 22 passes for 192 yards with two touchdowns. His second touchdown was the most impressive, on fourth and 13 they opted to go for it as Favre threw up a desperation attempt that was caught, by Chansi Stuckey, for a touchdown. The Jets hope Favre can transform a team that went 4-12 last year into a playoff contender and with the Pats QB Brady out it’s a definite possibility.
Other Notable AFC East game
The Buffalo Bills (1-0) put on a show in their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks winning 34-10 as -1 point favorites. Bills QB Trent Edwards made 19 of 33 passes for 215 yards with one touchdown. They constantly pressured their opponents quarterback and their defense stepped up when needed. Next up for the Buffalo Bills is a road game against the 0-1 Jacksonville Jaguars, on Sunday September 14. The Jags (0-1) lost their opener to the Tennessee Titians 10-17 as -3 point road favorites. They were held to just 33 yards rushing on 17 carries and they converted just 5 of 13 third down conversions. NFL Oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com have the Jacksonville Jaguars as -6 point home favorites over the Buffalo Bills with the over/under listed at 38 points.
