Denver Broncos vs Cincinnati Bengals NFL Week 1 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The Cincinnati Bengals have QB Carson Palmer back as they start the 2009 NFL season hosting the Denver Broncos, Sunday Sept 13, as the Broncos hopes lie with former Chicago Bears QB Kyle Orton. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Bengals as -4 point home favorites over the Broncos with the over/under set at 43.5 points. The Broncos parted ways with former QB Jay Cutler after he broke John Elway’s record last year throwing for 4,526 yards with 25 TD’s. Now they put all their eggs in one basket with former Bears QB Kyle Orton, who had 18 TD’s with 2,972 passing yards last season.  In the 33 games he has played in during his first three seasons in the league, Orton has thrown for 5,319 yards and 30 touchdowns. On top of that, he has a career record of 21-12 as a starter. The Broncos have a lot of new faces on their squad with the signing of 17 new players. Most of them will be on defense as they look to avoid being one of the worst at stopping their opponents. The Broncos picked up former Eagles standout Brian Dawkins and Andre Goodman was also brought in to replace Dre Bly at cornerback. The Bailey, Goodman and Dawkins defensive backfield will be the strength of the club and should allow the Broncos to blitz early and often. The Broncos went 8-8 SU last year and were 4-11-1 ATS. They are 7-3 SU when playing in September and 5-5 SU when playing outside the AFC West. They went 1-3 SU during the pre-season.

The Bengals will be glad to have QB Carson Palmer back and they’re praying that he has a season like he did in 2007-08. Before an injury prone 2008-09 season Palmer had 26 TD’s after throwing for 4,131 yards. He’ll have the usually cast of receivers in Chad Ochocinco, who’s looked like his old self in the preseason, Former NY Jet WR Laveranues Coles is as surehanded as they come, Coles had seven TD’s with 790 receiving yards, and rangy Chris Henry is a dangerous redzone threat. Their offense will be much improved and look for Palmer to take to the air. As for defense they had to work harder as their lack of offense made extra work for their defense. With their offense expecting more time on the field this should give their defense more time to rest. They added a big-name safety in Roy Williams and a big defensive tackle in Tank Johnson. Their first two draft picks brought in some good talent in Andre Williams and Rey Maualuga. They're hoping that Maualuga can bring in some leadership to the defense right off the bat. The Bengals are 4-6 SU in September and 3-6-1 SU when playing outside the AFC Noth. They went 2-2 SU during the pre-season.

Recent Trends to Consider:

  • Broncos are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games in September.
  • Bengals are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
  • Broncos are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Over is 7-0 in Broncos last 7 games in September.
  • Over is 5-2 in Bengals last 7 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0.

The Bottom Line: The Bengals will be way better this season and with the Bengals offense up against a Broncos unproven defense, it could get ugly.
