NFL Picks: Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

The Cheese Heads in Green Bay (1-0) couldn’t be any happier with their home opening win against Minnesota, while the Detroit Lions (0-1) opened up their season with a road loss in Atlanta. The Packers hope to take their winning ways on the road when they square off against the Detroit Lions, Sunday September 14, at Ford Field. NFL oddsmakers at Looselines.com have the Green Bay Packers as -3 point road favorites over the Detroit Lions with the over/under set at 44 ½ points. The Packers got a 24-19 win over Detroit in QB Aaron Rogers first start as a Packer quarterback. He made 18 of 22 passes for 178 yards with one touchdown pass and a touchdown run, which he celebrated by doing the Lambeau Leap. Packers fans have finally accepted Rogers as their go to guy. RB Ryan Grant was their top rusher on the day with 12 carries for 92 yards, one of which was a 57 yard blast up the gut. They finished with, a 14th ranked, 139 rushing yards. WR Greg Jennings had five catches for 91 yards as the Packers finished with, a 17th ranked, 317 total yards. They must be more disciplined and not take stupid penalties. The Packers had 12 infractions that cost them a Week 1high 118 yards, they were penalized for 1,006 yards last season, second-most in the league. The Packers have won five straight and 13 of the last 15 against the Lions. The Packers totaled 71 points in two meetings last season, under QB Bret Favre though!

The Lions lost badly 21-34 on the road to Atlanta, the Lions fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and eventually gave up a franchise record 220 yards rushing to the Falcons. QB Jon Kitna made 24 of 33 passes for 262 yards with two touchdown passes, he was intercepted once and he fumbled. Atlanta rolled up a league high 318 yards on the ground against the Lions defense, and gave up 474 total yards. In addition to the defensive woes, they managed just 62 rushing yards of their own and allowed three sacks of Jon Kitna. Surprising they managed to maintain solid defense against the pass, giving up an 8th ranked 156 pass yards.
