Jacksonville Jaguars vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Week 1 Picks

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, September 10th, 2009

The Jacksonville Jaguars start the 2009 NFL season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, Sunday Sept 13, as Colts QB Peyton Manning tries for his fourth straight season throwing over 4,000 yards. The Colts lead the Jags 3-2 SU in their last five meetings. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have the Colts as -7 point home favorites over the Jaguars with the over/under set at 44.5 points. The Jaguars added some additional beef to their offensive line to help QB David Gerrard see his options. QB David Gerrard was awful throwing 15 TD’s with 3,620 passing yards, but a whopping 13 interceptions. They ditched a few troublesome, underachieving wide receivers and brought in WR Torry Holt to be the go to receiver on the club. Torry Holt had 64 catches for 796 yards along with three TD’s with St.Louis Rams. A consistent and capable threat down field should help Gerrard. RB Maurice Jones-Drew is now the fulltime runner as Fred Taylor is no longer with the club. Jones-Drew finished last season with 12 TD’s after rushing for 824 yards. If he can continue to produce in the running and passing game with a full workload, the Jaguars could have a high power offensive attack. WR Matt Jones led all receivers with 65 catches for 761 yards and three TD’s. On defense they’ll have to stay healthy if they want to return to the defensive powerhouse they once were. They can be a force to reckon with, with John Henderson, Reggie Hayward and company. If Rashean Mathis, Reggie Nelson and Brian Williams all play up to potential and produce turnovers, the unit may be able to drastically improve over their poor 2008 showing. The Jaguars are 6-4 SU when playing in September and 3-7 SU when playing within the AFC South. They went 1-3 SU in the pre-season.

The Colts are expecting another great offensive season this year led by QB Peyton Manning and RB Joseph Addai is back and healthy. The Colts had a great passing game but they struggled on the rush finishing second to last. They drafted RB Donald Brown, from Connecticut, to complement a healthier Joseph Addai, he could be a big contributor. QB Peyton Manning had a great season finishing with 27 TD’s with 4,002 yards passing. For the Colts to succeed this year they’ll need to be at full capacity at the pass and rush. WR Reggie Wayne and TE Dallas Clark are back, they contributed a combined 12 TD’s with 1,993 receiving yards. TE Dallas Clark is Manning's go to guy when under pressure. Their defense shined against the pass, finishing 6th in pass yards allowed and 7th in points allowed. The biggest concern for the defense for the Colts also will be injuries. Always injured Bob Sanders needs to find a way to stay on the field for a full season. His break neck, aggressive style is what makes him so effective but it also leaves him on the disabled list far too often. The tandem of Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney will continue to provide great pressure on opposing quarterbacks, as a tantum they had 23 sacks. The Colts are 8-2 SU when playing in September and 7-3 SU when playing within the AFC South. They went 1-3 SU in the pre-season.
