The Rams have nowhere to go but up after a dismal season where they had one of the worst offenses and defenses. QB Marc Bulger managed 11 TD’s after throwing for 2,720 yards. His main WR Torry Holt has left the Rams and their passing game will be up to WR Donnie Avery. Avery did just as good as Torry Holt last season with 53 catches for 674 yards with three TD’s. RB Steven Jackson had a slow start to the year missing four games, but still proved himself to be one of the best running backs in the league when healthy. Jackson had 1,042 rushing yards with seven TD’s while the versatile runningback also had 40 catches for 379 yards with one TD. They’ll still have a weak offense as their focus has shifted to defense. New coach Steve Spagnuolo promises to provide more of a focus on creative and aggressive defensive scheming than on an all out offensive attack. Spagnuolo has brought in several players from the Giants, where he was the defensive coordinator. The Rams are 1-9 SU when playing in September and 1-9 SU when playing inside the NFC West. They went 3-1 SU in the pre-season.

The Seahawks success begins and ends with the status of QB Matt Hasselbeck's back. He wasn't healthy last year, struggled, then was shut down for the last nine games of the season, and the team had major issues. If he's in good shape, this unit has a chance to be pretty decent. Before Hassleback was injured he had 28 TD’s after throwing for 3,966 yards in 2007. He’ll have a new weapon to throw to with the signing of WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who had 92 catches for 904 yards with four TD’s playing with a struggling Bengals squad. WR Deion Branch should be a reliable number 2 option with Houshmandzadeh drawing the coverage in his direction. Their running game will be focused on Julius Jones this season, as Maurice Morris is no longer on the club. If all four of the above players stay healthy, the Seahawks offense has the potential to be quite potent in 2009 and compete with Arizona. Their defense should have more depth upfront; in the middle and should be sturdier and stingier. The Seahawks are 7-3 SU when playing in September and 7-3 SU when playing inside the NFC West. They went 4-0 SU in the pre-season.
