The Giants have gotten rid of their distractions and are ready to prove they are a strong team that can compete in the all tough NFC East. QB Eli Manning had a good season last year with 21 TD’s after throwing for 3,238 yards. He’ll have his running machine RB Brandon Jacobs back, he had 219 carries for 1,089 yards and 15 TD’s. The Giants had the best running game in the NFL. There are still doubts related to the receiving group. With the loss of WR Plaxico Burress and WR Amani Toomer, will Eli and the Giants have a passing game? The Giants used their first round pick on WR Hakeem Nicks, a player they hope can immediately step in for Burress. The 6-2 wideout has had three productive years with the Tar Heels, in just three years Nicks has been the most prolific receiver in Tar Heel history. They’ll need someone to step up at tight end, and for young WR’s Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon to continue emerging as consistent weapons.
The Redskins stuck with QB Jason Campbell and made a huge off season splash with the $100 million signing of defensive stud Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth had 51 tackles with a whopping 8.5 sacks with three forced fumbles. Campbell had 13 TD’s with 3,245 yards passing last season. They also used their first draft pick on defensive end Brian Orakpo, from Texas. Nevertheless, while on defense things look promising, the offense is relatively in turmoil. Their best way at moving the chains was their running game. Running back Clinton Portis continued to assert himself as one of the underrated offensive studs in the league. He had nine TD’s after running for 1,487 yards giving the Redskins an 8th ranked running game. They’ll still have the triple threat of receivers in Santana Moss, Chris Cooley and Antwaan Randle El. Campbell has displayed good potential, and protects the ball really well, but with no help from his less than stellar O-Line, things on offense don't look as promising as they do on defense. If their offense spends little time on the field their defense will be beat down and their secondary is susceptible. the Redskins just signed former Giants' practice squad QB Andre Woodson. This move by the Redskins could be somewhat worrisome. Woodson spent a year and a half learning the Giants' plays, and already stated he would help the Redskins in every way he can. This could play a factor in the play calling, as the G-Men will surely change their calls a bit to avoid Woodson's knowledge.
