The Oakland Raiders opened their season on Monday night with a miserable showing against AFC West rival, the Denver Broncos. The Broncos moved at will on the Oakland defense, compiling 441 yards of offense and putting 41 points on the scoreboard. The Raiders will have a little easier task this week in dealing with a less explosive Chiefs offense, but they will need to put last week behind them.
On a positive note for the Raiders, quarterback JaMarcus Russell looked pretty good aside from holding the ball too long on occasion. He completed 17-of-26 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie running back Darren McFadden also had 46 yards on nine carries.
Kansas City took the Patriots to the wire in Foxboro, but they were unable to punch the ball in the endzone in the final minute. The Chiefs displayed a conservative, ball control offense that kept their defense fresh throughout the game and the 17-10 final reflected it. The Kansas City defense managed to keep the Brady-less Pats from lighting up the scoreboard, something New England did almost every week last year.
Starting quarterback Brodie Croyle will be out for this week's game with a separated shoulder and veteran Damon Huard will start in his place.
Key Match-up: The Raiders defense will need to hold up to what is sure to be a grind it out offensive approach by the Chiefs. Last week Denver came out throwing the ball all over the field and burned the Oakland secondary repeatedly. The Chiefs will look to set up the pass via the run but new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will throw in some bootlegs just as Denver did with Cutler.
