The Broncos QB Jay Cutler looked impressive in Week 1 action after he completed 16 of 24 passes for 299 yards with two touchdown passes as the Broncos defeated Oakland 41-14. His main target was WR Eddie Royal who had 9 receptions for 146 yards with one touchdown. They didn’t do a lot of rushing, but they managed 142 yards with RB Andre Hall getting 61 yards. QB Jay Cutler will be up against a weak pass defense, ranked 28th, that allowed 246 pass yards in Week 1. They might allow RB Andre Hall and RB Selvin Young more time on the ground as the Chargers gave up 142 rushing yards last week. On defense the Broncos allowed 167 pass yards and 150 yards on the ground. Despite giving up 167 pass yards the Broncos have the league’s best CB Champ Bailey (eight Pro Bowls and 24 interceptions since 2004) and CB Dre Bly (two Pro Bowls and five interceptions last year) who shut down the Raiders receivers. The Broncos didn't allow the Raiders to score until the fourth quarter. They have won eight consecutive season openers at home.
The Chargers lost their home opener, 24-26, in the final two seconds of the game after the Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw a 14 yard pass that connected with WR Dante Rosario. QB Phillip Rivers made 17 of 27 passes for 217 yards with three touchdown passes. RB LaDainian Tomlinson had 21 carries for 97 yards with no touchdowns. Their top receiver was WR Antonio Gates with 4 catches for 61 yards cwith one touchdown. Their pass defense gave up a whopping 246 yards in the air and allowed their opponents 142 yards on the ground. Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman pulled the plug on his 2008 season on Tuesday when he told the San Diego Chargers he'll have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee. The loss of Merriman is a big one for a team that has Super Bowl expectations. The Chargers went 1-4 on the road before winning their last three straight road games.
