The Steelers pulled off a 15-9 overtime win against Atlanta in their 2010 debut. They opened the season with QB Dennis Dixon as starting quarterback since QB Ben Roethlisberger must serve a 4 game suspension. Dixon in his second career start hit on 18 of 26 passing for 236 yards no touchdowns and 1 pick. Surprisingly he only rushed twice all game and produced 4 yards. The Steelers got great production from starting RB Rashard Mendenhall who produced 120 yards on 22 carries which includes a 50 yard touchdown run to win it in overtime. The veteran WR Hines Ward led Pittsburgh with 6 catches for 108 yards. Mike Wallace contributed with 2 catches for 62 yards. The Steelers were able to move the ball last week with 354 yards on the Falcons. The issue with the Steelers last week was their inability to sustain drives as they produced just 4 of 14 on third down . Pittsburgh was solid on defense and stuffed the Falcons good run game as they held Atlanta to just 2.3 yards per rushing average. Falcons star running back Michael Turner had just 42 yards on 19 carries. It was Troy Polamula pulling down his first interception of the season last week as the talented safety was healthy. Falcon QB Matt Ryan surrounded by plenty of weapons in the passing game was unable to pass for a touchdown on the Steelers. Their defense is back, but not for long against the Titans high powered offense.
The Titans killed Oakland 38-13 at home after QB Vince Young’s two touchdowns, no picks and a 142.8 quarterback rating, minus a fumble, impressed. RB Chris Johnson was just as good with 27 carries for 142 yards with two touchdowns. The Unsung hero of the game was Punter Brett Kern who averaged 44.5 net yards on four punts, helping produce an average drive start for the Raiders that was 11 yards worse than Tennessee’s. Just as good as their offense was, and is, their defense was just as good, if not better. As they did in the preseason, the Titans got a lot of plays from a lot of guys on defense. Will Witherspoon, Jason Babin, Derrick Morgan and Jacob Ford had sacks and Babin and Ford also forced fumbles. Dave Ball had two passes defensed. Jason Jones had a tackle for loss. Ryan Mouton forced a fumble. That’s a lot of production. This week’s game will be a strong test for Young as he prospered last year against the lower echelon defenses and was ineffective against the upper echelon . Oakland is definitely a lower echelon team and based on last week’s performance and good health the Steelers could be labeled as upper echelon.
