Jacksonville (1-0) edged the Tennessee Titans 16-14 in their season opener Sunday after RB Maurice Jones-Drew scored a touchdown in his return from knee surgery, and a flawless start behind new starting QB Luke McCown. Jacksonville dominated for most of the first three quarters, but Tennessee made it close with two second-half touchdown passes. Now injuries are plaguing the Jags again. Four key starters are ailing, causing concern that the team may be without them for extended periods of time. DE Aaron Kampman was inactive in the team's first game of the season, RT Eben Britton was also inactive, allowing Guy Whimper to get the call. During the game, Pro Bowl TE Marcedes Lewis came up hobbling in the second half, an injury that was first thought of as cramps but turned out to be more than that. A long-term injury to Lewis could be more devastating than any of the others combined. With the new play at quarterback, Lewis becomes more of a security blanket in the passing game. And on a play where he tried to make an interception, defensive back Derek Cox injured himself. So what does this say for a team that was already in transition, had a new quarterback in center in Luke McCown and a running back who felt slighted in how many carries he got in the second half against Tennessee? It could be a sign of trouble if players do not mend quickly, Kampman does not come back full speed and Britton does not add more strength to an offensive line that pushed the Tennessee defensive line around for most of the game.
New York Jets (1-0) got a 27-24 comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys after Nick Folk kicked a 50-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to win the game. After going pass heavy last week, will the Jets balance it out more this week? Who will they feature at running back, Shonn Greene or LaDainian Tomlinson? The Jets are better at just about every position than the Jaguars, with the only possible exception at running back. Jags QB Luke McCown is an inexperienced quarterback with receivers that are not very talented. With cornerbacks like Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie covering the Jaguars receivers, there will be turnovers if he chooses to challenge either cornerback. head coach Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettiness will have no problem with blitzing for the vast majority of the game. With the cornerbacks in coverage, extra linebackers and possibly safeties can be sent, which should stop any attempts to run the ball with Maurice Jones-Drew. It is a similar story for the Jets offensive unit as they will be able to do absolutely anything they want. The offensive line should be able to easily create holes for Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson, while Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller and Plaxico Burress should be able to get open throughout the game.
