Detroit overcame three interceptions by franchise quarterback Matt Stafford for a come-from-behind 27-23 win over the St. Louis Rams at Ford Field. Stafford capped a 9-play, 80-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Smith with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Stafford put it in the air 48 times for 355 yards Sunday and easily would have reached 400 yards if not for a few drops. » The Lions’ defensive line was dominant for stretches. Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams and Nick Fairley all had sacks.
Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said the Lions must be more balanced and more efficient Sunday. “This will be a game where we’ve got to be able to have a certain amount of success doing both” running and passing, Linehan said. “If this defense forces you one-dimensional, it makes things pretty tough. They’ve proven that last year and saw how they were able to win the game last week. This is one of the toughest challenges we’ve had as far as playing an opponent like this, defensively, on the road, all those things. But our guys are up to challenges, and this one here I think they’re pretty excited about.”

San Francisco got a 30-22 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. QB Alex Smith completed 20 of 26 passes for 303 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. San Francisco’s two-headed backfield beast of Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter wore down the Packers’ defense to the tune of 186 yards.
From a personnel standpoint, San Francisco’s defense is as scary as any in the NFL. Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman are two of the five best linebackers in the league, Justin Smith is coming off an All-Pro season at defensive end, and Aldon Smith had 14 sacks as a pass-rush specialist as a rookie and another in the season-opening win at Green Bay last week.
Because of the handshake, focus has been taken away from the outstanding game the two teams played last season. The contest — between the then 5-0 Lions and 4-1 49ers — went back and forth, culminating with a game-winning touchdown reception for San Francisco on a fourth-and-goal with less than two minutes to remaining.
