Dog Day Afternoon in NFL Week 2 Games

by Alexander Banks on Monday, September 17th, 2007

Dog Day Afternoon in NFL Week 2 GamesIf you liked Sunday’s favorites then you lost money with your NFL Picks as underdogs dominated the day covering 10-of-13 games with one push. It’s much easier to talk about the three teams that covered, Steelers, Cowboys and Patriots, as they are few. The lone push came in the game between the Lions and Vikings. The three teams that covered the spread did so in a big way too. The Steelers dominated the Bills 26-3 covering -10 ATS, the Cowboys clobbered the Dolphins as a -3 ½ point road favorite 37-20 and the Patriots didn’t need to steal signs from the Chargers, jumping to a 24-0 lead at half time and cruising to a 38-14 win covering the point spread -3 ½.

"The Bookies cleaned up yesterday," said NFL betting expert Brad Marchetti. "How would you like to cash on 94% of the bets in one game? Thats how much was wagered on the Bengals yesterday."

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Washington Redskins for Monday Night Football on ESPN and are installed a -7 point chalk favorite by oddsmakers at BetOnline.com . If you want my advice, go with the trend and bet your mortgage the Skins will cover. If the Eagles performance in week-1 at Green Bay is any indication of what to expect from the birds then, Washington +7 offers much value.

Sunday’s best game award goes to the Browns/Bengals matchup. With Brady Quinn waiting in the wings, Browns’ starting quarter back Derek Anderson threw five touchdown passes and along with 216 yards rushing by Jamal Lewis, the Browns clipped the Bengals in a wild-one 51-45.

Last week’s starter Charlie Frye was sent packing to the Seattle Seahawks after the Browns week-1 embarrassing loss to the Steelers. Browns’ coach Romeo Crennel indicated if things didn’t get any better he might be the next one out the door. Don’t expect Anderson to be the long term solution calling the signals. He is strictly a custodian of the position until first round draft pick Brady Quinn is ready to step in permanently.

“How bout those Dallas Cowboys,” fans are hollering down the streets of the Big-D. Off to a 2-0 start, the boys are looking sharp along with the New England Patriots who we might as well be put in a different category from everyone else. If the Pats keep this up, Bill Belichik won’t have to worry about financial security, not that he is now. The same can’t be said for Norv Turner in his first year leading the Chargers. Most of us thought San Diego would make a game of it Sunday night but instead were made to look like chumps.

Is the Pack back? Brett Favre became the winningest quarterback in NFL history after the Packers downed the Giants 35-13 on the road in Giants Stadium to go 2-0 for the first time since 2001. New York now falls to 0-2. The seat only got hotter for Giants Tom Coughlin. It’s been 11 years since the Giants have dropped their first two games and that year, 1996 coach Dan Reeves was shown the door. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com had Green Bay as a +3 underdog at kickoff.
