Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers NFL Week 2 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The Green Bay Packers play their second straight home game, Sunday Sept 20, as they do battle with the Cincinnati Bengals, who lost a heartbreaker last week to Denver. The Packers have won three of the last four meetings to knot the overall series at 5-5. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Packers as -9.5 point home favs over the Bengals with the over/under set at 42.5 points. The Bengals lost to Denver 7-12 after a last minute fluke catch. QB Carson Palmer showed a little bit of rust after missing time in the preseason, as he did not throw a touchdown and had two interceptions after completing 21 of 33 passes for 247 yards. RB Cedric Benson finished with 76 rushing yards on 21 attempts; WR Chad Ochcinco had five catches for 89 yards. Cincinnati will be challenged not to allow last Sunday's heartbreaking loss against Denver to linger. Their offensive line must allow Palmer some time to find open receivers as the Packers rush defense is solid. The Bengals offense generated 16 first downs, four rushing and 12 passing and they made 5 of 15 third down conversions.

The Packers beat Chicago 21-15. QB Aaron Rogers made 17 of 28 passes for 184 yards with a TD. WR Greg Jennings caught six passes for 106 yards and the winning touchdown. When Rodgers struggled to get going for much of the game, Jennings proved to be his safety net. The Packers' pass protection was expected to be a potential strength prior to the season, but their offensive line was very shaky against the Bears in Week 1. Rodgers was sacked four times and RT Allen Barbre was routinely beaten by Chicago's Adewale Ogunleye. Look for the Bengals to try and exploit Barbre with speedy pass rusher Robert Geathers and disrupt the Packers' timing. In their first game in the 3-4 defense the Packers forced four turnovers and sacked Cutler twice. RB Ryan Grant has 100-plus rushing yards in four of his past six games at home. The Packers offense generated 12 first downs, four rushing and eight passing and they made 4 of 14 third down conversions.
