Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Buffalo Bills NFL Week 2 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The Buffalo Bills will have to put their Week 1 loss behind them as they get set to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Sunday Sept 20. This will be Tampa Bay's first trip to Buffalo in club history. Tampa Bay has won six of the past seven meetings against Buffalo, but haven’t met since 2005. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have the Bills as -5 point home favs over the Buccaneers with the over/under set at 42 points. The Bucs (0-1) lost to Dallas 21-34 at home. QB Byron Leftwich made 25 of 41 passes for 276 yards with a TD. RB Cadillac Williams had 13 carries for 97 yards with a TD, while WR Michael Clayton had five catches for 93 yards. Leftwich was sharp against the Cowboys. His only blemish was being unable to locate the best receiver on the team – Antonio Bryant. If Leftwich can continue his solid play and do a better job of hitting Bryant on the deep ball, the Bucs could have a dangerous offense. On defense the Bucs have struggled since the departure of former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and it showed in Week 1, giving up 462 total yards to the Cowboys. They did do well at stopping third down conversions; they allowed the Cowboys to make 3 of 10 first downs. The Bucs offense generated 26 first downs, 10 rushing and 14 passing and they made 5 of 13 third down conversions.

The Bills (0-1) lost to New England 24-25 on the road. QB Trent Edwards made 15 of 25 passes for 212 yards with two TD’s. In his first game with Buffalo, WR Terrell Owens wasn't much of a factor after he was held to just two catches for 46 yards. RB Fred Jackson had 15 carries for 57 yards and five catches for 83 yards with a TD. The Bills led most of the game, but the Bills one and only turnover proved to be very costly. Bills LB Paul Posluszny left the game with an arm injury and did not return.  Their defense must do better at stopping third down conversions; they allowed the Pats to make 10 of 16 first downs. They must recover quickly to avoid going down two games in the ultra competitive AFC East. The Bills offense generated 17 first downs, five rushing and 10 passing and they made 4 of 10 third down conversions.
