The Saints got the defense of its Super Bowl title off to a good start with a 14-9 home win over Minnesota. The Saints scored their fewest points in a win in Sean Payton's four-plus seasons, but the coach left satisfied despite a handful of mistakes. The Saints finished with 308 yards, well below its league-best average of 403.8 in 2009 . QB Drew Brees made 27 of 36 passes for 363 yards with three TD’s and no interceptions. The Saints didn't commit a turnover, gave up one sack to the best pass rushing team in the league last season and didn't allow a point in the second half. The Saints and 49ers were divisional rivals from 1967 to 2001 and faced each other twice a year. The Niners dominated the Saints and the division during that span going 45-18-2 over that span. Since realignment, the Saints have won five straight in the series, four of which were at home.

The Niners Coach, Mike Singletary, was far from happy after a 31-6 loss to Seattle last week. The 49ers were a popular pick as a favorite to win the NFC West after completing their first perfect preseason in 18 years. San Francisco, however, failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 19 games. The Niners have to call upon WR Michael Crabtree for more offense. If the first game was any indication of how Crabtree is going to be used, it will be a long season for the 49ers. Besides Crabtree the whole receiving core is going to have to be utilized more. Crabtree made only two catches for 12 yards. Let the kid do what he does best, go deep! RB Frank Gore could not get it going against the Seattle Seahawks defense, the offensive line was discombobulated, Alex Smith didn't have much time to throw, plays were not getting called in time so timeouts were wasted especially in the first half, and the receivers were hardly utilized. You can bet we’ll see some more passes this cweek.
