Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons NFL Picks, Odds & Predictions

by Matt Foust on Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons NFL Picks, NFL Odds & NFL Predictions: The Panthers are in Atlanta today to take on the Falcons at the Georgia Dome. Carolina suffered a horrendous home loss last weekend against the Eagles, but a road win over a division foe would definitely boost the Panthers sagging confidence. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm ET on FOX. NFL Picks at SBGglobal.com have the Falcons listed as a -6 against the spread favorite.

Panthers Breakdown: If the Panthers could erase their last two Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons NFL Picks, Odds & Predictionsoutings at Bank of America Stadium from their collective memory, they most definitely would. Last Sunday the Eagles flew into Charlotte and added insult to injury by laying a 38-10 beat down on Carolina. The lopsided result was due, largely, to the Panthers inability to secure the ball (seven turnovers). The chief offender was quarterback Jake Delhomme, who completed almost as many passes to Philly defenders (four) as he did to his own teammates (seven).

For the game, Carolina amassed 169 yards and converted just three of its 16 third down opportunities. Most disturbing, however, was a miserable ground attack that managed just 86 yards (2.9 yards per carry). The Panthers ranked third in the league last season, producing 152 rushing yards per game. Running back DeAngelo Williams, the catalyst for last year's stellar numbers, had 14 carries for 37 yards against the Eagles on Sunday.

Falcons Breakdown: Atlanta got a nice win last weekend at home beating the Miami Dolphins 19-7. The offensive numbers were not overwhelming for the Falcons as they posted just 281 total yards and a paltry 68 on the ground. That said, they did enough to get the win as quarterback Matt Ryan completed 22-of-36 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Tony Gonzalez wasted no time in making his presence felt, catching five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.

The Falcons defense had a banner day, holding the Dolphins to 259 yards. Miami converted just four of its 11 third down opportunities and also fumbled the ball away on three different occasions. Defensive ends John Abraham and Kroy Biermann proved to be difference makers, combining for nine tackles and four sacks.

NFL Picks Series Notes: The Panthers are 3-1 straight up and 3-1 against the spread in their last four games at the Georgia Dome. However, they fell 28-45 to the Falcons as a +1 road dog in their most recent meeting there. Carolina beat Atlanta 24-9 (-7) at Bank of America Stadium last season.
